Ellen “Bess” (Vance) Hagaman, 91, a Janesville resident since June of 1961 died Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Agrace Center for Hospice and Palliative Care following a brief battle with cancer. Bess was born in Louisa, Virginia on August 21, 1923, the daughter of Samuel Fain and Adeline (Carroll) Vance. When she was in the fourth grade the family moved to Hopewell, Virginia where she remained in public schools until her graduation. At the start of World War II she started working for C. & P. Telephone Company of Virginia, an A.T.& T. Company. She advanced to Traffic Supervisor, where she worked for 20 years. Bess married Wayne Hagaman on September 26, 1953 at the West End Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia. The joy of their lives, their daughter, Ellen was born while they resided in Hopewell. After the family moved to Janesville, Wayne joined his brother in operating Hagaman Electric, an electrical contracting business. Bess proudly enjoyed her work as Director of Residents Services of the independent living section of Cedar Crest Retirement Community, a position she held from 1970 until she retired in 1995. Bess and Wayne moved to Cedar Crest’s Independent Living in 1990 and she continued to live there following his death in 1997.
Bess Hagaman is survived by her daughter, Ellen Cazy and son-in-law, Jeffrey Cazy, her grandchildren, April and Christopher Cazy, her sister, Anne Stacy of St. Petersburg, FL, nephews, Scott and Vance Stacy and families including Marjorie, a niece and Samantha, a grand niece, two nieces in Virginia, Alice Pritchard and Elizabeth Hagaman as well as extended family and dear friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Vance.
A memorial service to honor Bess Hagaman’s life will be held in the Chapel at Cedar Crest Retirement Community on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Froiland officiating. Memorials may be made to Cedar Crest in Bess’ name. The family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home.
